Educators vs Parent Volunteers: Understanding the Roles
At Grow Your Mind Academy Foundation, we believe that a thriving homeschool community depends on both skilled instructors and engaged parents. While both groups contribute to student learning and the co-op experience, their roles are distinct.
1. Paid Educators
Paid educators are responsible for planning and teaching classes, workshops, or enrichment programs. They are compensated for their time, expertise, and preparation.
-
Hired as independent contractors
-
Deliver high-quality instruction aligned with curriculum and program standards
-
Mentor and guide students in their subject area
-
Focused on student learning outcomes and classroom experience
-
Complete required background checks and qualifications
2. Parent Volunteer Roles (Co-Op Participation)
Parents participate in the co-op as an integral part of the community. These volunteer roles support the program and help keep tuition affordable while fostering engagement and shared responsibility.
-
Volunteer for two roles per family (can include assisting in classes, helping with events, coordinating clubs, or supporting committees)
-
Help with setup, supervision, and student activities
-
Enhance the community by mentoring, assisting, and contributing to co-op operations
-
Not paid — participation is a requirement for co-op enrollment
3. Optional Volunteer Opportunities
In addition to required co-op roles, parents and community members can choose to volunteer in other areas:
-
Yearbook, newsletter, or communications support
-
Planning special events, field trips, or workshops
-
Mentoring students through clubs or committees
These opportunities are optional but help strengthen our community and give families additional ways to be involved.
Paid Instructors
Paid instructors are the experts leading classes, workshops, and enrichment programs. They bring their skills, knowledge, and professional experience to the community, focusing on delivering high-quality instruction and mentoring students.
Parent Volunteers
Parent volunteers are a vital part of the co-op community, supporting programs, events, and enrichment activities. Every family contributes through volunteer roles, helping ensure students and instructors have the resources, support, and environment they need to thrive.
TEACH WHAT YOU LOVE
One of the greatest strengths of our homeschool community is the freedom for teachers to share subjects and skills they are genuinely passionate about.
Whether it’s writing, math, cooking, sewing, music, science, engineering, creative arts, technology, outdoor learning, or anything in between, we want our students to learn from people who love what they teach. By bringing passion and expertise to the classroom, our educators inspire curiosity, creativity, and a lifelong love of learning.
FLEXIBLE AND FAMILY-FRIENDLY
We understand that our teachers have families, careers, and other commitments.
That’s why we prioritize flexible scheduling and reasonable time expectations, making it possible for passionate educators to share their knowledge and skills without sacrificing balance or family life. At Grow Your Mind Academy, teaching with us is designed to fit your lifestyle while making a meaningful impact on students and our homeschool community.
A COMMUNITY BUILT ON SUPPORT
We know that homeschooling can feel isolating at times — for both parents and children. That’s why Grow Your Mind Academy is designed to bring families, students, and educators together.
Teachers play a key role in creating that sense of belonging, helping students build relationships, develop new skills, and feel connected to a community that supports their growth. Through classes, workshops, clubs, and enrichment activities, educators help students thrive academically, socially, and emotionally — all while fostering a welcoming, collaborative homeschool environment.
